ME 498-KCT: Optics Theory and Application

Class Description:

This course is intended to provide a practical understanding of light to engineering and science students who are non-specialists. A basic introduction to both the properties and control of light (photons) will be presented, with a special emphasis on current applications and technologies. Advanced background in electromagnetics is not required. Course topics will include the following:

  • Optics fundamentals (e.g., ray optics, wave optics, Fourier optics)
  • Wave propagation (e.g., guided-wave optics, fiber optics)
  • Laser optics (e.g., photons and atoms, lasers)
  • Mechanical properties of light (e.g., optical tweezers, optical angular momentum)
  • Microscopy (e.g., widefield, phase-contrast, interference)
  • Optoelectronics (e.g., detectors, sources, sensors)
  • Optical metrology (e.g., ellipsometry, reflectometry, spectroscopy)

In addition, students will have the opportunity to be trained in 4 basic (hands-on) laboratory experiments that include:

  • Beam alignment and collimation
  • Polarization optics
  • Fourier optics
  • Interferometry
