The 2014 Larine Y. Cowan Make a Difference Award for Teaching and Mentoring in Diversity has been awarded to Andrew Alleyne, MechSE’s associate head for undergraduate programs and Ralph M. and Catherine V. Fisher Professor.

Alleyne earned the Cowan award for his work in the recruitment and mentoring of women and underrepresented minority candidates as students and faculty members at Illinois.

There are four categories for the Larine Y. Cowan awards, including Advocacy for LGBTQ Affairs, Excellence in Access and Accommodations, Leadership in Diversity, and Teaching and Mentoring in Diversity.  All four are awarded by Illinois’ Office of Diversity, Equity, and Access, an office that “seeks to identify, recognize, and honor nominees that demonstrate exceptional dedication to and success in promoting diversity and inclusion through teaching, research, hiring practices, courses, programs, and events.”

Alleyne received his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1994 and subsequently came to Illinois.  He served as the College of Engineering’s Associate Dean for Research from 2008 to 2012.
