Huajian Gao, the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Engineering at Brown University, presented the 2014 Yunchuan Aisinjioro-Soo Distinguished Lecture on September 11 in the NCSA Auditorium.

Professor Gao's lecture was titled Mechanics of Nanotwinned Materials in Engineering and Biological Systems.

"Nanotwinned materials have been simultaneously fabricated in the laboratories and discovered in nature," Gao said as part of his summary. "They seem to universally display interesting mechanical and physical properties including superior strength, hardness, ductility, toughness, strain hardening, fatigue and wear risistance, and excellent electrical conductivity."

The annual Soo lecture was established in 1992 by Professor Shao Lee Soo and his wife, Hermia, in memory o
f Professor Soo's mother. Professor and Mrs. S. L. Soo wanted to perpetuate the memory of his mother, Yunchuan Aisinjioro-Soo (1899-1991). Born Princess Shansji of Aisinjioro, the last Royal House of China, she took the pen name Yunchuan and became an accomplished poet and artist. Throughout the turmoil of revolution and war, she steadfastly believed that the way for the family to serve the people is through the education of its children.

At the conclusion of the lecture, Professor Gao received a plaque of recognition from the MechSE Department, bestowed by Department Head Placid Ferreira.
