For several decades, Ferreira has worked in the area of precision engineering, making seminal and innovative contributions to the industry, such as software methods for modeling and compensating for quasi-static errors on numerically controlled machine tools; novel high-precision parallel-kinematic designs for manufacturing machines and MEMS-scale systems; 3D self-calibration techniques for machine tools; and nanoscale precision patterning and assembly processes. In addition, he has made contributions to the control of flexible manufacturing systems. Many of his contributions have had a profound impact on engineering research and practice.
Ferreira’s work has led to significant economic benefits in the industrial setting, and his research in emerging areas like nanoscale manufacturing is creating exciting new opportunities for sustained economic growth.
“I am very honored to receive this award, particularly because ASME plays such an important role in manufacturing research, which ultimately helps bring back manufacturing jobs to this country,” said Ferreira.
