For the first annual Exploring MechSE summer camp - part of the coed series of camps, called "Exploring Your Options," through the College of Engineering - high school men and women had fun exploring a wide variety of topics and fields within mechanical engineering.

The camp took place in and around Mechanical Engineering Lab the week of June 21-27. MechSE professors Elif Ertekin and Matt West, along with Education Coordinator Joe Muskin and many MechSE graduate students, led the campers through activities that included 3D printing, visiting the Mechanical Testing Instructional Lab, building a prosthetic arm or leg, testing the dynamics of polymers for sporting equipment, experiencing a cleanroom, and learning about water contaminants and water treatment processes. They also took field trips to the Caterpillar facility and Vesuvius (a molten metal flow engineering company).

"It was great to work with so many smart and creative students. They experienced how rewarding and fun mechanical engineering is with their in-depth project, and were exposed to the great breadth that exists in the field with some hands-on projects our faculty engaged them in. But perhaps most important, they also got a good sense of what life as a mechanical engineer would be like thanks to the great interactions with the team of facilitators and the site visits we made," said Muskin.
