Professors Randy Ewoldt and Matt West are once again bringing non-traditional examples into MechSE courses—this time using a bow and arrow to demonstrate several cross-course principles in TAM 212 (Introductory Dynamics) and TAM 251 (Introductory Solid Mechanics) in a more engaging way.

Working with the campus’ Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL), they recorded video of an arrow being shot, illustrating concepts such as measurement of stored energy and its transition into kinetic energy.

The effort was aided by students in the Society for Experimental Mechanics, who constructed the apparatus to hold the bow and draw and release the arrow.
