The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering was well represented at the International Conference on Plasticity, Damage, and Fracture 2020.

Held in early January in Rivera Maya, Mexico, Professor Huseyin Sehitoglu and Research Associate Professor Seid Koric both were featured presenters.

Sehitoglu gave the plenary talk “Twin Interfaces and Slip Emission in Shape Memory Alloys.” He also received the prestigious Khan International Medal, an award that recognizes “outstanding life-long contributions in the field of plasticity primarily through research contributions.” The criterion for selection includes 50 percent numerical input based on citations of his/her research papers, plus 50 percent objective input by the committee members.

Koric, who is also Technical Director at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at Illinois, gave the plenary lecture “Stress and Deformation in Solidifying Stainless-steel Shell based on Visco-plastic Constitutive Models and Multiphysics.” This research is in collaboration with MechSE professor emeritus Brian G. Thomas. The team has for the first time applied their multiphysics solidification model developed at Illinois to a stainless steel grade, novel research that is of significant industrial relevance and was recently published.
