When Nemanja Kuzmanovic completes requirements for a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in May, he will become the first member of his family to graduate with a four-year degree.

He transferred to Illinois from the College of DuPage and said he chose his area of study because he appreciates what Nikola Tesla did to improve the world around him.

Kuzmanovic earned a Presidential Scholarship at DuPage and enrolled in the Pathways to Engineering Program, which allows students who achieve certain requirements at participating two-year institutions around the state to transfer to a program in the College of Engineering at Illinois.

While at DuPage, he joined the Engineering and Technology Club, and wrote a systems engineering paper that allowed the team to travel to the Kennedy Space Center to compete in the NASA Robotic Mining Competition. Thanks to its success, the team was recognized in Congressional Record by U.S. Representative Peter Roskam, who represents the 6th district of Illinois. Kuzmanovic also participated in DuPage’s Engineering & Technology club, where he helped design and build a robot for the Midwestern Robotic Design Competition, which was held on the University of Illinois campus.

At Illinois, he is an active member of the Pi Tau Sigma mechanical engineering honor society. He is completing his Senior Capstone Design project, in which he is part of a team that is working with Cozad New Venture competition winner Psyonic on characterizing the mechanical performance of the finger module on a myoelectric prosthetic hand. He also has interned at Shure, Inc.

When not studying engineering, he plays intramural soccer on a team with fellow College of DuPage transfer students.

Kuzmanovic will be honored at the College of Engineering Student and Alumni Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 7.
