As an upcoming senior in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Dylan Harmon is interested in sustainability.

“Technical understanding is an important component to understanding this world. I hope to use my background to speak to the sustainability concerns facing our society and explain technical necessities to others not as well-versed,” said Harmon, who is from Grayslake, Illinois.

In this vein, Harmon has pursued educational opportunities focused on sustainability and renewable resources. For more than a year he has served as an intern for the Urbana Sustainability Commission, where he has “examined and compiled city ordinance, energy-use and census data to create realistic projections of energy use” and explored the potential for wind energy production. He also worked as an undergraduate research assistant for MechSE Assistant Professor Leo Chamorro’s Renewable Energy and Turbulent Environment Group, where he “participated in exploring the differing height heterogeneity on the characteristics of boundary layers and other features of turbulent flows.”

In his free time Harmon enjoys rock-climbing, hiking, biking, and traveling with family and friends. He is honored to be a recipient of the 2017-2018 LyondellBasell Futures in the Chemisphere Scholarship.

“There are always times where we have less and times when we have more. Getting this scholarship when I have less will remind me to give when I have more.”
