Ricardo Robles, who completed his freshman year in MechSE in May, said he chose to attend Illinois because of its high ranking. “With the prestige of the program and my growing interest in the work of engineers, I believe the brightest future for me includes a degree in mechanical engineering from Illinois,” he said.

Robles, a native of Oak Lawn, Illinois, has enjoyed all of his courses so far. “My entire schedule is very interesting and I enjoy almost every class. I personally had zero coding experience prior to coming to Illinois, so CS 101, Introduction to Computing, has taught me a lot and is very interesting and enjoyable,” he said.

He is also a huge sports fan. “I love playing sports, but I am also a big spectator. I’ve been to two football games cheering on the orange and blue.” He also enjoys building projects, especially projects related to mechanics.

Robles said he is grateful for his scholarship support. “In due time I hope I will also be able to repay the gift to a student in dire need of funds. An education is the best gift one can give. I will do all in my power to offer others the opportunity I myself was given.”

He is honored to be a recipient of the 2017-2018 Edward E. & Lillian Hussemann Memorial Scholarship.

“A scholarship enabled me to attend Illinois, I couldn’t be more grateful. My parents were not able to pay tuition without scholarships. I appreciate all the help I receive and am truly amazed at the opportunity I have been given. The engineering program here is wonderful, I’m thankful I am able to enroll in such an honored program.”

Making a Difference

“I am a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), which is a club that works to empower minorities. In addition, the club hosts numerous events to help other students acclimate to the new university lifestyle.”
