Brian Thomas, the C.J. Gauthier Professor Emeritus in MechSE, was recently named a Distinguished Member and Fellow of the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST).

He was honored for his “significant contributions to the understanding and improvement of the continuous casting of steel. As one of the world’s leading experts in the field of validated computational models, his work has provided scientific explanations for the formation of unique casting defects, and as a professional, he has distinguished himself as a prolific author, researcher, academic and innovator.”

He was formally recognized at the AISTech 2017 Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in May.

Thomas is also a Research Professor in MechSE, and the Director of the Continuous Casting Consortium, a cooperative research effort among the University of Illinois, the steel industry, and the National Science Foundation. Created in 1991, the CCC develops comprehensive mathematical models of the continuous casting of steel slabs and applies these models to improve understanding, optimize processes, and solve practical problems of interest to participating members.
