Andrew Lamore recently graduated with a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (M.Eng.ME). We asked him to reflect on his experience in the program, why he chose Illinois, and how his degree is serving him in his career.

Where do you currently work, and what is your position?
I work for Boeing as a Mechanical Design and Structural Analysis Engineer

How does your Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (M.Eng.ME) help you in your current position?
The M.Eng program trained me to understand complex problems and deliver effective solutions.

What made you decide to pursue an M.Eng in Mechanical Engineering?
I pursued the M.Eng.ME because of the career path flexibility. The engineering and professional development at Illinois prepared me to execute daily action items at Boeing. I have had opportunities to work in labs, perform design analysis, and assist suppliers with their logistics. I would not have had these experiences without the M.Eng degree.

Did you consider other institutions for the program, and why did you choose Illinois?
I considered staying at Virginia Tech since I received my BS in Mechanical Engineering. I choose Illinois because of the opportunities to expand my network with successful students and professors.

What skills do engineering leaders need today? How can students in professional master’s programs acquire those skills?
I believe communication is the most important skill to have as an engineer. Whether it is talking to your boss about your execution plan or reading test procedures and results, clear communication drives progress. M.Eng.ME students can acquire this by writing and presenting complex topics, while their peers and professors evaluate their performance.

Do you have anything else you’d like to add?
I highly recommend taking courses from Dr. Miljkovic. He is one of the most personable and thought-provoking professors I have had.
