MechSE alumna Ritu Raman, (MSME ’13, PhDME ’16), was named to Forbes’ annual “30 Under 30” list for 2018 recognizing young “visionaries” in a variety of categories.

Raman, a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, earned a spot in the Science category. Forbes describes her work as “applying new materials and technologies, like 3D bio-printers, to build muscle-powered robots.”

The focus of her current research is on the design of new smart materials that dynamically respond and adapt to their environment—with the goal of more reliably delivering medication to people through a long-lasting pill device.

Raman was a graduate research fellow at Illinois from 2012 until 2016, where she consistently won recognition for her innovative work. She was also recently named a L’Oreal Women in Science Fellow.
