UIUC Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering Alumnus Dr. Chengyin Yuan (Ph.D. ME, 2005) is one of nine researchers selected to receive an SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award in 2010. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers confers this award on young engineers, age 35 or younger, who have made significant achievements and have shown leadership in the field of manufacturing engineering. Dr. Yuan will be presented with his award at the 2010 SME Fall Meeting in Dearborn, Michigan.

Dr. Yuan is currently a senior researcher at General Motors Global Research and Development Center in Warren, Michigan. His present research interests are virtual manufacturing, automation system design and control, distributed systems and simulation, sustainable manufacturing, electrical vehicle battery manufacturing. His work has resulted in 30+ technical publications and 10+ US and International patent applications.

Dr. Yuan is a member of several organizations including IEEE, ASME, and SME where he is an active member of the Oakland/Macomb Chapter 069. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his research at GM, including the “Best of the Best” Chairman’s Honor award and the Boss Kettering award.
