Richard Buckius, currently serving the National Science Foundation as Assistant Director of the Directorate of Engineering, has received the Charles Russ Richards Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The award recognizes outstanding achievement in mechanical engineering within 10 to 20 years following graduation.

His many notable research contributions have enhanced fundamental knowledge in the thermal sciences, specifically in the areas of radiation heat transfer, convective transport and conduction. In 2006, he received ASME's James Harry Potter Gold Medal, which recognizes eminent achievement in the science of thermodynamics in mechanical engineering.

Professor Buckius has consistently been among the department's top-ranked graduate and undergraduate instructors, and he has received the highest teaching awards given at the campus, college and departmental levels. The American Society for Engineering Education awarded him its Ralph Coats Roe Award in 2003, in recognition of outstanding teaching and professional contributions.

As Assistant Director for the Directorate of Engineering, Professor Buckius plays a key role in setting the agenda for engineering research and oversees NSF's nearly $600 million engineering research and education budget.
