The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has selected Research Professor Richard DeVor and co-authors Professor Shiv Kapoor and Andrew Honegger, an Illinois MSME alumnus to receive the 2008 Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award. The best paper award was established in 1954 to recognize the best paper or papers related to the design or application of machine tools, gages or dimensional instruments.

The trio won the award for their paper, "A Hybrid Methodology for Kinematic Calibration of Micro/Meso-Scale Machine Tool (mMTs)," which describes the trigger probe measurement system and measurement methodology they developed for the kinematic self-calibration of micro- and meso-scale machine tools. The new measurement methodology reduces recalibration time by dividing off-machine and on-machine measurements. The methodology saves time, because only the on-machine measurements need to be repeated.
