First Mid.Mech.Mat workshop draws diverse experts

The nation’s top researchers from university and industry on mechanics of new, complex, and multifunctional materials gathered recently at Illinois for the first Midwest Workshop of Mechanics of Materials and Structures.

The nation’s top researchers from university and industry on mechanics of new, complex, and multifunctional materials gathered recently at Illinois for the first Midwest Workshop of Mechanics of Materials and Structures. 
 
The one-day workshop, sponsored by MechSE and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, included eight invited talks, a poster session, and 20 oral presentations by student researchers. More than 150 participants came from across the Midwest, including Purdue, Northwestern, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, and Utah State. 
 
Several MechSE faculty, including Professor Huseyin Sehitoglu and Professor Martin Ostoja-Starzewski, were among the list of speakers presenting their findings on contemporary topics in the field. 
 
The workshop also welcomed diverse and distinguished speakers including Adjunct Professor Ben Freund (MatSE); Yonggang Huang (Northwestern); Professor John Rogers (MatSE); Professor Nancy Sottos (MatSE); Michael Thouless (Michigan); and Thomas Siegmund (Purdue).
