MechSE alumnus receives India’s prestigious Bharat Gaurav Award
Dr. Vishal Nandigana has been awarded the Bharat Guarav Award for his academic excellence throughout his undergraduate and graduate studies. The award is being presented to him by the India International Friendship Society (IIFS) later this spring.
Now an assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Nandigana began his collegiate education at the College of Engineering in Guindy earning a bachelor’s of engineering. He continued, receiving both an MS (2011) and a PhD (2016) in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.
Nandigana credits the reception of his award to two of his graduate PhD works, one being the collaboration with EPFL Switzerland on NanoPower generators and the other being the discovery of a non-dimensional “Nandiagana number” which predicts the onset of electro-convective instability in nanopores.
Reflecting on his time in MechSE, Nandigana said, “I am extremely proud to be an alum of UIUC MechSE department which first of all gave me an admission to carry out my MS/PhD in 2008. I feel honored to work under the guidance of Professor Narayana Aluru who mentored me throughout my PhD and stood like a great pillar to successfully defend my thesis. I will always cherish my experience working with him at UIUC.”
