In the recently released 2015 graduate school rankings from U.S. News and World Report, the MechSE Department improved to No. 5 in mechanical engineering.

"We’re happy to be recognized with a top 5 ranking among ME graduate programs," said Professor Harley Johnson, MechSE’s associate head for graduate programs. "We are very proud of our graduate programs both in Mechanical Engineering and in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. The fact that we offer both of these programs actually sets us apart from other top institutions. And the excellence of our graduate students, as measured by the number of prestigious fellowships they’ve received, and the fact that 25% of our PhD grads go on to tenure-track academic careers, is really the key to our success."

Overall, the graduate engineering program at Illinois ranked 6th in the Best Graduate Schools issue of U.S. News and World Report (published March 11, 2014). These rankings are largely quantitative, deriving much of the data from the ASEE surveys we complete each fall.
