Six student society representatives atttended MechSE’s first Student Leadership Council meeting to discuss upcoming activities for 2009-2010.

  • The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) will host its Midwest Conference at Illinois for the first time.
  • Members of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) will be visiting high schools in the Chicago area. They also plan to invite Chicago-area high school students to campus, so they can shadow SHPE student members. President Obama is scheduled to address SHPE’s national conference in Washington D.C.
  • Members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) are preparing to host the organization’s annual “ME for me Conference,” showcasing post-graduation industrial job opportunities. This September, the local chapter is also hosting the Dremel Derby, a competition sponsored by Dremel Bosch that is similar to the Boy Scouts of America’s Pinewood Derby. Tech Electives Night and Peer Advising are also on the agenda.
  • The Pi Tau Sigma society is focusing on high school outreach activities. This year, the society will again sponsor the MechSE Forum (a rap session between students and faculty) and tutoring for ME & TAM classes. Members will attend the society’s national convention in February.
  • This year, the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) team will unveil a radically new car. They plan to totally redesign the engine and work with industrial designers. They are currently working on the design and looking for sponsors.
  • The Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) has moved from Talbot Laboratory to the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory (MEL) They will continue to host lunches with professors and are working on building a trebuchet, a siege engine that was used during the Middle Ages to smash masonry walls or to throw projectiles over them.
