Professor Brian Thomas was elected to ASM International's College of Fellows. Fellows of the society, which serves the materials science and engineering community, are selected for their oustanding contributions to research, education and other advances that improve quality of life.

Thomas' research in the continuous casting of steel has advanced the state of knowledge about the way product defects form, how processing can minimize such defects, how quality can be monitored and diagnosed, and how the continuous steel casting process can be controlled. His computational models have gained widespread acceptance in the steel industry. During the last 20 years, has been a lead instructor for the Brimacombe Continuous Casting Short Course offered in Vancouver, Canada, through which he has disseminated important theoretical and practical knowledge to more than 2000 people involved in the steelmaking industry, from caster operators to doctoral-level researchers.
