MechSE adjunct assistant professor and senior research engineer Bruce Flachsbart has won the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, an honor that recognizes campus staff who have demonstrated sustained excellence in and innovative approaches to undergraduate teaching, and having an overall positive impact on student learning.

Up to 13 individuals on campus are awarded for their commendable teaching performance: five faculty, five graduate teaching assistants, and three instructional staff. The awards are presented at the annual Celebration of Teaching Excellence on April 30.

Since 2000, Flachsbart has worked as a research engineer in the MNMS Laboratory, where he oversees research teams developing new fabrication tools and techniques for federally funded programs. In his 25 years of experience working in cleanrooms, he has built and tested novel devices and developed fabrication processes. He earned a BS, MS, and PhD in electrical engineering at Illinois in 1990, 1994, and 1999, respectively.

He has taught 19 classes at Illinois, including MEMS-NEMS Theory and Fabrication (ME 498/487) and Design for Manufacturability (ME 350), and also owns a patent for a “multilayer microfluidic-nanofluidic device.”
