Seok Kim, an assistant professor in MechSE, was recently honored with the 2015 Chao and Trigger Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from ASME

Kim received the award for his “advancement of micromanufacturing research with transfer printing and reversible adhesion-based microassembly, enabling the integration of heterogeneous materials and the construction of complex 3-dimensional microsystems that cannot be realized by other existing methods.” Established in 2011, the award recognizes a young manufacturing researcher under 40 with potential for significant fundamental contributions to the science and technology of manufacturing processes.

His research interests focus on two diverse yet interrelated fields—bio-inspired engineering and micro/nano-scale engineering. He is interested in the fundamental understanding and exploitation of materials, mechanisms, and organizing principles observed in nature.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is a non-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and skill development across all engineering disciplines while promoting the role of the engineer in society.

Formal presentation of the award will take place at the 2015 ASME Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference in June.
