COVID-19 Information for Incoming Graduate Students

Dear Fall 2020 Incoming Graduate Students,

In the United States and elsewhere, COVID-19 is affecting every aspect of our lives, including I-20 shipment/transmission, travel, and visa processing.

For Fall 2020 incoming graduate students who are not currently in the United States, please know that important decisions are being made, and will continue to be made, by the federal government of the United States. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering will respond to and adhere to federal guidelines.

We do not know what the federal guidelines will be in August. This is true for both domestically-located and internationally-located students. Our advice at this time is to proceed as though you will be able to travel to Illinois and to enroll in August. If current or future travel and/or visa restrictions make Fall 2020 enrollment impossible, we will work with you to defer your admission until you can join us. The video posted above states that we should know more in June regarding methods of course delivery for Fall 2020.

We understand that we all have questions about what is going to happen in the coming months. Frankly, we do not know.

We will update this posting as conditions develop.

Best in health,

Professor M. Taher Saif, Associate Head for Graduate Programs and Research
Amy Cates, Susan Roughton, and Kathy Smith, Graduate Programs Office
