Mission

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering is to prepare our graduates:

To become science-based engineers and professionals, having a thorough knowledge of mathematics and physical science, a broad grasp of mechanical engineering principles and methods, and an ability to apply those fundamentals in practical situations with integrity;

To develop as persons and professionals, continually expanding their knowledge and abilities, communicating effectively with others, maintaining the highest ethical standards, exercising leadership, contributing as team members, and functioning capably within the global workforce; and

To sustain and advance human society by contributing to technological innovation, creating new knowledge and new engineering techniques, as well as through service to professional societies and community services.

Objectives

The educational objectives for the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics programs reflect the mission of the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering and the importance placed on successful professional practice, the ability to pursue advanced degrees, the assumption of professional and societal leadership roles, and a commitment to life-long learning. University of Illinois Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics graduates will:

Objective 1:      
Successfully enter a profession that involves Mechanical Engineering/Engineering Mechanics skills or pursue graduate/professional education.

Objective 2:      
Advance in their chosen fields to technical leadership and/or management positions.

Student Outcomes

a. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering

MechSE Department Facts

Enrollment

In the 2015-16 term, the MechSE Department has 899 undergraduate students majoring in Mechanical Engineering; 139 undergraduate students majoring in Engineering Mechanics; 217 graduate students working on master's degrees; and 205 graduate students working on PhD degrees.

Degrees Granted

In 2015-16, the MechSE Department awarded 255 bachelor of science degrees; 111 master's degrees; and 33 PhD degrees.

Faculty

MechSE’s 61 full-time faculty are all active in research and publish in high-impact journals, such as Science, Nature, Applied Physics Letters, and more. Even more impressive, Engineering at Illinois faculty are ranked firstamong our peers in the number of publications per faculty. On average, 20 or more of the papers written by senior professors are cited more than 10 times. More than half have received young investigator awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) or Department of Defense.

Research

Research expenditures of $25 million allow faculty and students to advance knowledge in key fundamental areas such as biomechanical sciences, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, applied physics, chemistry, dynamics and controls, computational science and applied math.

Rankings

MechSE's undergraduate program is currently ranked 6th, and our graduate program is ranked 4th best in the world, according to US News and World Report.

The median ACT composite score of undergraduate students entering the department is 32.6. Graduate students enrolling in 2015 had average GRE percentile of 90 (Quantitative).
